International Duty For Euro 2008 Qualifiers
Four Bolton Wanderers were on international duty yesterday as they took part in the Euro 2008 Qualifiers.
Nicolas Anelka scored the first of six goals for France when they took on the Faroe Islands in front of a crowd of just over 8,000 at the Torsvollor Stadium. Anelka turned in a cross from Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich) in the 7th minute. Anelka recently mentioned that Ribery is a player that Bolton should be wary of when they travel to Munich.
Christian Wilhelmsson scored one of the three goals that enabled Sweden to beat Liechtenstein with ease. Christian skilfully dribbled past a couple of defenders before his driven shot past Peter Jehle.
Jussi Jaaskelainen kept a clean sheet in a scoreless draw between Belgium and Finland in front of what was more of a gathering rather than a crowd at just 4,100 spectators.
Another scoreless draw was experienced by Joey O’Brien at Croke Park where Ireland entertained a jubilant Germany after the single point meant that they were the first team to qualify for Euro 2008. However, the solitary point that Ireland earned does little to save them from being knocked out of the competition. Andy O’Brien was called up but had to withdraw from the squad.
Greek star Stelios Giannakopoulos took part in the 3-2 home victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina in what was a closely thought battle at the Spyros Louis Stadium in Greece.
Former Wanderer Eidur Gudjohnsen scored Iceland’s two goals either side of Latvia’s impressive run of four goals in 20 minutes.
