It may have been a dream start for Sunderland’s new striker Darren Bent but it was more of a nightmare for Megson, Bolton and their supporters.
All of Bolton’s new signings made their debuts, although Lee Chung–Yong had to wait until the 68th minute. Unfortunately none made the impression that Sunderland’s Darren Bent made, he beat Kevin Davies in the air to nod the visitors ahead just five minutes into the game. It could have been sooner if it weren’t for Bolton’s Zat Knight who blocked an early free kick.
This early goal led me to wonder if Megson is hell–bent on copying Allardyce this season. Did the order of ‘let one in’ reach Jussi soon after Man City went ahead at Ewood Park?

Jaaskelainen helpless as the Bent’s header falls goalward.
While Sunderland dominated in the first half, Bolton did show signs of improvement in the second. The final result would have been different if it weren’t for Bolton’s defence who blocked a number of shots and The Black Cats’ goalkeeper Martin Fulop who made two great saves to maintain Sunderland’s lead to the bitter end.
Bolton next match is away to Arsenal on Tuesday, August 18, 2009.
Since the away trip to Arsenal has been postponed Bolton’s next match is away to Hull City AFC on Saturday August 22, 2009.
A fixture that brings back memories of seeing the BWFC team twice after the match in the 90s. Firstly when they stopped at the same chippy as us and secondly on the M62 as the team coach sped past while I changed a wheel. Happy days!
