Dutch Defender Destined for Reebok?

Another week, another transfer rumour. This time is Birmingham City’s Mario Melchiot who is being watched by Bolton boss, Sam Allardyce, with a view to sign him in January.

Melchiot, who usually plays as a right back, would add to Allardyce’s options in defence when rotating the team, which seems to be becoming a crucial part of Big Sam’s masterplan to do well in European and domestic competitions.

Mario is another player who is shortlisted to join The Trotters in January who has hopes of playing in The World Cup next year and by joining BWFC hope to raise their profile to lift their chances.

While Nicky Hunt is currently out until the new year but Joey O’Brien has done a outstanding job in the right back position, so some may argue if Melchiot is actually needed.

Well, his experience in Europe would be useful, having play in both The UEFA Cup and The Champions League for both Ajax and Chelsea. Also Mario enjoyed being part of Chelsea’s success in The Premiership, The FA Cup and Charity Shield back in 2000.

Mario has said, “every two minutes someone in the UK has a heart attack – only half survive.”

What does this have to do with his move to Bolton? Nothing. It’s just proof that Mario’s heart is in playing football in England!

Actually, Mario is one of the faces that helped launch the British Heart Foundation (BHF) ‘Feel the Pulse’ campaign.

He continued, “do your bit to help us keep hearts beating. Get your ‘Feel the Pulse’ wristband from BHF Shops now! I’m wearing mine.”

Indeed he is, as shown in the photo.

The Wanderers will be busy in three competitions in November with a mixure of UEFA Cup, Premiership and Carling Cup games to be played.

  • Thursday 3 | 20:00 | The Reebok | FC Zenit | UEFA Cup
  • Monday 7 | 20:00 | The Reebok | Tottenham | Prem
  • Monday 21 | 20:00 | St. Andrew’s Stadium | Birmingham | Prem
  • Thursday 24 | 20:30 | D. Afonso Henriques | Guimaraes | UEFA Cup
  • Saturday 26 | 14:00 | Craven Cottage | Fulham | Prem
  • Wednesday 30 | 20:00 | The Reebok | Leicester | Carling Cup

Bolton’s first game in November will possibly be their most difficult, Russian team FC Zenit currently are at the top of Group H having beaten Guimarães 3-0. Guimarães will be Bolton’s second contender’s in the UEFA Cup in November, however The Trotters will be making a trip to Portugal which may leave them tired for an important away game against Fulham.

Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques – very nice

Hopefully injuries will clear up to bolster Allardyce’s options and we will see success in all three competitions.

I must point out that all fixtures are subject to change.

Prince Footy Takeover

HRH Prince William visited Charlton Athletic last Friday (October 28) as part of his preparations before taking over the Football Association President job duty from his Uncle Andrew in May 2006, just in time for the World Cup.

Nice to see that he is preparing early at least, but why go to Charlton? Especially when he is an Aston Villa fan. Yes I know, ‘Aston Villa’ – why is that? Hardly the local team, did his mum come from the Midlands? Or was is dad’s decision, “don’t support Arsenal or Chelsea my boy, pick one of those northern teams, people will think you are in touch with the common people. Wonderful PR – I support The Trotters, that lion reminds me of the one of ones on ones flag.”
