Allardyce on BWFC’s Win at The Valley

Wanderers boss, Sam Allardyce said, “Charlton had dominated us in the first half, but we dug in and made life difficult for them.”

“We then took control of the game and it was about waiting for the right opportunity – and when that came, as fortunate as we were, we took it with open arms, and then defended very stoutly afterwards.”

Sam gave goal scorer Kevin Nolan high praise, hinting that Kev should be in the England squad. Personally, I would not disagree with Allardyce, not because he’s a big fella, but I too think that Nolan is an excellent player with a lot of talent and confidence, England would benefit for sure.

“Kevin Nolan wins Wolrd Cup for England.”

What a headline that would be to see in 2006!

Meanwhile, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley said, “Bolton do what they do best – put teams under pressure.” He continued, “everyone knows what Bolton are going to do, so I am not going to knock it.”

I am not sure that Bolton are predictable as Curbishley implies, if they were then surely ‘everyone’ includes other managers in The Prem and changes in tactics, formation and perhaps players would be made and Bolton would have suffered more losses and not be 4th.

Silly man!

I must say that Charlton have done well so far this season.
Just not as well as Bolton have.

Carling Cup : Fourth Round Draw

Bolton Wanderers Football Club have been drawn against Leicester City in the 4th Round of The Carling Cup. The Foxes will travel to The Reebok on Wednesday 30th November (to be confirmed) for an evening kick-off. This additional fixture for The Trotters takes the number of first team games in November to a total of six.

The other fixures in the Fourth Round are as follows:

  • Manchester United v West Bromwich Albion
  • Doncaster Rovers v Aston Villa
  • Arsenal v Reading
  • Wigan v Newcastle United
  • Charlton v Blackburn Rovers
  • Middlesbrough v Crystal Palace
  • Millwall v Birmingham City

These fixures will take place during the week commencing Monday 28th November.

I’d like to see a Bolton verses Wigan final.

Bolton are currently 10/1 to win the Cup, whereas Wigan are 25/1 and the current favourites, Manchester United at only 3/1 followed by Arsenal [5/1] and Newcastle [6/1].

MIDDLESBROUGH SCORE!!! 2 minutes – too early I fear.

Report to follow…

The game opened at a high pace but with very little to get excited about apart from Kevin Davies heading close in the third minute. Both teams shared possession and pretty much took turn in forming an attack but neither team could finish.

Jussi Jaaskelainen caused some worry after twisting his ankle but was able to carry on after receiving treatment. Soon after there was a comedy moment Jay Bothroyd totally missing the ball on the edge of the six-yard-box following Ambrose’s low cross from the left. Bolton could breathe again as it was a clear chance to open the scoring.

Bothroyd had a successful strike of the ball which was blocked and fell for Darren Ambrose. It seemed like Ambrose had scored from close range but the referee spotted Ambrose using his arm to gain control and therefore did not allow the goal.

Bolton could breathe for a second time in the opening 22 minutes.

Charlton did seem the more likely to score as the first half drew to an end but Jussi was only required to take goal kicks as Charlton failed to test the Bolton ‘keeper.

Five minutes after the break Gary Speed was first to come close to scoring with his powerful free-kick from 25 yards out. Stephan Anderson made a great save on his line as Bolton closed in.

Bolton enjoyed more possession in the second half but Charlton defended well making The Trotters struggle when going forward. Kevin Davis came everso close but couldn’t quite reach Diouf’s cross across the six yard box.

Faye's Fate

According to the official Bolton Wanderers website (www.bwfc.co.uk) Abdoulaye Faye is on the verge of signing a permanent deal with The Wanderers.

Faye is currently on loan from Lens (France) and has proved himself worthy of a permanent deal with Bolton, especially against West Brom recently and in The Trotter’s games in the UEFA Cup.

Sam Allardyce said, “we would be delighted to sign him,” and gave the Senegal international player high praise, “I’m glad to say he looks very comfortable, he’s starting to make a big contribution for us.”

Will Nakata be next?
